5 Furniture Tips in 5 mins
1) Plan! Simple but often overlooked, make sure you’ve thought through each room thoroughly so you spend your time on the right items. Narrowing your search means you’ll have more time to spend on getting a good deal.
2) Buy from the same shop: buying more than one item from a store means they can give you a better deal. Also, it may mean savings on shipping and delivery. Never underestimate the discount you can get on a 2nd or 3rd item!
3) Look into the smaller stores: big retailers have lots of overhead and advertising costs to cover. Very similar items, with similar quality, can be found at smaller, local stores at much better prices. Don’t compromise quality. Look here
4) Look online: the same furniture can often be found online for a lot less. The price is not lower because the quality is cheaper – it’s lower because these shops are financially lean and can pass savings on to customers. Be open to online stores just wary of smaller shops without a great customer track record.
5) Question stores on their refund or exchange policy. Everyone provides warranty, but very few have a flexible window if you’re unhappy with your product. A strong refund/exchange policy implies a company that believes in the products. Be wary of no refund or 48-hour notices to inspect your product for quality!
Have fun shopping!
Showroom versus Online Shopping
If you've shopped for furniture, our guess is you've struggled with this question: should I buy online or go with an actual store where I can see the furniture in a showroom.
Aside from the obvious - that you can see and try the product in one and not the other - there's a few things to keep in mind when thinking through this:
- Advice and questions: typically showroom shopping is a better experience, since you can personally interact with the customer representatives. For lots of people, especially students or young adults new to furniture shopping, this can be helpful. If you do shop online, make sure you give the store a call and speak to a representative. You can usually tell a lot by a short phone interaction.
- Testing Furniture Quality: if you're familiar with furniture, you can look for signs of good furniture quality in the showroom. You can check the seams on a sofa, the foundation of a sectional, or the wood construction of a dining table or coffee table. Now this isn't always an advantage since you have most of us cannot tell a quality piece and a poorly made one! Make sure you're familiar with telling furniture quality, or showroom shopping is not always an advantage on this front.
- Costs: Showrooms take up space, and space costs rent. This is usually embedded into the costs of all items. Online stores save this overhead and provide better quality furniture at lower prices.
- Return policies: It can usually be harder to return an item to an online store. Make sure to check the return and exchange policies of online stores, to make sure the company stands behind their items.
The bottom-line is, there are good and bad stores online and offline. If you're a visual person, and need to touch and see your purchase in person, make sure you chose a quality and reputable store with a showroom. If you can go without seeing the item before purchase and are looking for better quality furniture at lower prices, stick with online, and make sure the store you choose has a solid refund and exchange policy.
